Below you will find a detailed illustrated tutorial with step by step instruction, a basic diagram and a video for those who learn better from watching how the stitch is crocheted.

Pin it for later

The textured shell stitch pattern is a more complex pattern suitable for intermediate to advanced crocheters because it requires you to count stitches and know how tto read a pattern and diagram.

The pattern has a textured side and a flat side, and can be used in a variety of projects, from blankets and afghans to jumpers, shawls and borders.

Supplies I Used

- Marriner Yarns DK (light worsted) yarns in blue

Unfortunately MarrinerYarns ships only in the UK, so for my international customers, I can recommend a similar yarn, Red Heart Yarn , which comes is a multitude of colors and weights, just as affordable and easy to work with as Marriner Yarns.

- 4mm crochet hook

I get most of my crochet supplies from Amazon, it's fast and easy and I find everything I need in one place.

Crocheting The Textured Shell Stitch Pattern

The pattern is a repeat of 4 rows and requires multiples of 9 + 3 chains.

For this tutorial, my starting chain was 30 long.

Row 2: dc in the 5th hook, sk2, (dc, ch1, dc) in the following ch, sk2, *4dc, sk2, (dc, ch1, dc) in the following ch, sk2* x 2, 2dc, turn

Row 3: ch3, dc, * (dc, p) x 6 in the ch1 space below, (dc, ch1, dc) in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc below* x 2, (dc, p) x 6 in the ch1 space below, dc in the last 2 stitches, turn

Row 4: ch3, dc, ch1, *sk1 back post, 4bpdc, sk1 back post, (dc, ch1, dc) in the ch1 space below* x 2, sk1 back post, 4bpdc, sk1 back post, ch1, dc in last 2 stitches, turn

Row 5: ch3, dc, *(dc, ch1, dc) in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc below, (dc, p) x 6 in the ch1 space below* x 2, (dc, ch1, dc) in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc below, dc in the last 2 stitches, turn

Row 6: ch3, dc, *(dc, ch1, dc) in the ch1 space below, sk1 back post, 4bpdc, sk1 back post* x 2, (dc, ch1, dc) in the ch1 space below, dc in the last 2 stitches, turn

Row 7: ch3, dc, * (dc, p) x 6 in the ch1 space below, (dc, ch1, dc) in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc below* x 2, (dc, p) x 6 in the ch1 space below, dc in the last 2 stitches.

From this point on, the pattern is a repeat of rows 4 through 7.

Repeat the 4 rows until you have the required length.
